October 2020 Black History - Voter Suppression

Many take the right to vote for granted, but this month Spotlight is going to take a moment to appreciate recent documentaries that spotlight the history & current voter suppression tactics that have been used in the United States.

Amazon Prime Video has released “All In -The Fight for Democracy”that chronicles the gubernatorial race in Georgia in 2018.  I encourage you to watch with open ears, eyes and heart as Stacey Abrams shares her personal journey in her race for the Governor seat in Georgia.  CNN also produced "John Lewis - Good Trouble."  There are very scary tactics that continue today and that we are seeing in the news right now!

Have you heard or know what these Voter Suppression tactics are?

  • Voter intimidation
  • Poll Taxes
  • Literacy Tests
  • Grandfather clauses
  • Gerrymandering
  • Voter ID laws
  • Voter poll purges
  • Poll closures
  • Exact match

If not, I encourage you to:

  1. Watch "All In - The Fight for Democracy".
  2. Educate yourself on these terms and recognize it when you see it/hear it.
  3. Understand the issues & candidates on the ballot BEFORE election day.
  4. Make your voice heard and VOTE for EVERY election.
